Willem Dafoe Transitions from Superstar to Landlord for Whisky Collaboration at London Pub

He is used to gracing the silver screen.

Yet Willem Dafoe, 70, has turned his hand elsewhere – having taken over a London pub last week, much to the shock of fans of the megastar.

In a nod to his collaboration with Laphroaig Whisky, the Nosferatu star took over the The Barley Mow pub in Mayfair, to rename the free house The Barley Dafoe.

The dashing star brought the A-list touch to the swanky area as he posed in front of his ‘own’ pub while raising a glass.

Willem showed off his rugged style while gracing the pub as he sported a thick beard while rocking a chic polo neck to kick back with his whisky.

The opening of his pub comes after he made a short film with Laphroaig, titled The Taste and aiming to celebrate those who dare to stand apart.

The film was made by legendary music video pioneer Tim Pope, who worked previously with David Bowie, Iggy Pop and The Cure.

In the short, Willem speaks to the camera, saying: ‘The first time I ever travelled overseas, I went to Scotland…

‘I was a kid, and the first thing I thought when my feet touched down on the ground was, something feels familiar here…

‘I feel at home. The land spoke to me, and it must be genetic because my grandmother was from Glasgow…

‘The Taste depicts that sort of familiarity that’s found when exploring Laphroaig. It’s the flavours and how they come together’.

His work with the brand includes the creation of a limited-edition whisky. Willem has worked with Laphroaig’s Senior Blender, Sarah Dowling, to create a special release – currently maturing, set to launch in 2026.

Sarah said: ‘When we tried to imagine Laphroaig as a human being, we immediately thought of Willem Dafoe…

‘He is the very embodiment of our bold and distinctive spirit. It has been beyond exciting for me and the team to be a part of ‘The Taste’, and to get inside the hidden corners of Willem’s brilliant mind…

‘I wasn’t expecting there to be so many synergies between his approach to craft and character as an actor, to my own as a whisky maker. I can’t wait for the world to see what we have been creating together.”
