Darren Hayes Reveals Shocking Medical Costs After Fall: ‘America is Broken’

Darren Hayes has revealed his shocking medical bills after he suffered a horrific fall earlier this year.

The Savage Garden star, 52, shared a post to social media in April showing the aftermath of a traumatic fall he’d suffered the previous month, and the titanium brace that was holding his jaw in place.

Five months on from the traumatic event, Darren, who lives in Los Angeles, took to Instagram this week to reveal the eye-watering cost of his recovery.

He posted a photo of a medical bill charging him US$15,245 (AU$23,306) for ‘doctor/facility charges’, with an additional US$7,754 (AU$11,854) listed as ‘due to your doctor/facility’.

After discounts and a thankfully sizeable insurance rebate of US$5,929.78 (AU$9,065), Darren’s total came to US$8,172.72 (AU$12,494).

In the caption, Darren explained this was just one among many bills he had received during his recovery, estimating his overall costs to be an astonishing US$100,000 (AU$152,880).

‘So this is just one of the MANY bills I’ve received after breaking my jaw (for newbies don’t worry it was in March I’ve recovered)’, he wrote.

‘This is the bill AFTER insurance. And I have good insurance. This particular charge is for one surgeon who wasn’t part of the hospital so they had their own 15 grand fee.

‘I could add it all up but with my dental repairs etc it’s been about 100 grand. America is broken.’

The post elicited a flurry of comments from followers, with many Australian and UK fans chiming in to praise their countries’ public health systems.

Former Channel V star Danny Clayton commented: ‘I broke my back. I had a team of people work on me. My bill was zero Australian dollars. America, you are broken.’

Another follower chimed in with, ‘Wow. Just wow. So fortunate in Australia,’ while another added: ‘I’m so glad I live in the UK.’

Summing up the sentiments of many, a British follower wrote: ‘Wow that’s a lot of money. People in the UK moan about our NHS but they don’t realise just how lucky we are.’

It comes after Darren detailed the full extent of the incident and his ongoing recovery on Instagram back in April.

‘On March 17, two months after my mother passed away, I had a terrible accident. I’ve been trying to keep it private but my lengthy recovery period means it’s easier to admit the truth,’ Darren wrote.

‘I lost consciousness, I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed three times, losing consciousness each time.

‘The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in the left side of my head and with nine teeth shattered.’

The Brisbane-born singer credited emergency responders and medical staff for saving his life and said if the fall had occurred at a different angle, he might not have survived.

‘I’m so lucky I was found and taken to the amazing team at the emergency room of St John’s Providence in Santa Monica, where they acted quickly. I could have died if I landed in a different position,’ he added.

Alarmingly, there were warning signs before the accident and he revealed the fall may have been the result of an undiagnosed underlying condition.

‘I am under incredible care. I have an amazing cardiologist and oral surgeon. We are trying to work out how and why I have been fainting,’ he wrote.

‘So far my heart is normal, my arteries are normal and I don’t have a brain tumour or anything that could cause the accident.’

Darren said he would be spending the near future focusing on his recovery and told fans that his career was not a priority for the moment.

‘I just wanted my fans to know why I’ll be out of action for quite some time,’ he added.

‘After my jaw heals it’s a long road to rehabbing my jaw function and then of course replacing my shattered teeth. I love you folks.’

After forming in Brisbane in 1993, Savage Garden, consisting of Darren and bandmate Daniel Jones, released two studio albums: Savage Garden in 1997 and Affirmation in 1999.

The duo split in 2001 at the height of their fame.

Collectively, their albums sold 23 million copies worldwide, and the group won a record ten ARIA Music Awards in 1997.
