Miley Cyrus on Why She Won’t Part With Dress from First Date with Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus has held onto some of the ‘beautiful’ mementos from her past relationship with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. 

The 32-year-old Grammy winner – who recently worried fans by saying she is ‘not afraid’ to quit show business – opened up about the topic during an interview with Vogue published on Wednesday. 

The Flowers hitmaker first met the actor on set of The Last Song in 2009. Following an on-and-off again romance, the pair got engaged in 2016 and secretly tied the knot two years later. 

However, less than a year after saying ‘I do,’ the former couple announced their split -with their divorce being finalized in early 2020. 

Despite the separation, Cyrus still has a few items from when they were together and told the outlet, ‘I literally have a dress that I had on when I met my ex-husband, and then I have my dress that I wore on our first date.

‘Along with letters and things that I really, I want to savor these kind of beautiful moments of my life,’ the former Disney channel actress added. 

Cyrus further explained that ‘these intimate moments have also been public moments, it’s a little bit tough to decide what piece I want to share and what I would ever allow to be seen.’

The two stars first crossed paths in 2009 while taking on leading roles in the romantic drama The Last Song. 

Cyrus and Hemsworth began an on-and-off relationship which resulted in the pair getting engaged in 2012. However, they eventually called it quits in 2013. 

Three years later, the pair rekindled their romance and tied the knot during a private and intimate ceremony in December 2018. 

One day after Christmas, Cyrus jumped to her main Instagram page to announce that they had said ‘I do’ and shared a series of black and white snaps from the special day. 

It came shortly after the pair lost their Malibu home during the devastating Woolsey Fire in November 2018. 

Less than one year after marrying, Cyrus and Hemsworth announced their split in August 2019 – with The Hunger Games actor filing for divorce shortly after while citing ‘irreconcilable differences.’ 

At the time of the separation, a rep issued a statement to People which read: ‘Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. 

‘Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.’

The statement concluded with, ‘They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.’ 

The divorce was finalized in early 2020 – and the former couple were declared legally single in February of that year. 

Cyrus previously recalled the moment she knew her marriage was over to Hemsworth while at the Glastonbury Music Festival in 2019. 

‘So Glastonbury was in June which was when the decision had been made that me and Liam’s commitment to be married just really came from a place of love first,’ she explained in a TikTok video, per E! News. 

‘Because we’ve been together for 10 years – but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could.’ 

Cyrus added, ‘The day of the show was the day that I had decided that it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship.’ 

Following her divorce from Hemsworth, the singer has been in a relationship with musician Maxx Morando. 

Cyrus and Morando first began dating after they went on a blind date back in 2021 and their romance was officially confirmed the following year. 

During a past interview with British Vogue in 2023, the actress expressed: ‘Well, it was blind for me and not really for him. I thought, “The worst that can happen is I leave.”‘

The couple mainly keep their relationship out of the public eye, but have been spotted at a few events this year. 

Back in March, Miley and Maxx were seen walking the red carpet together at the 97th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood. Later that evening, the pair also stopped by Vanity Fair Oscars Party.

Cyrus has previously talked about her and Morando’s six-year age gap during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar late last year. 

‘He looks at life really differently than I do,’ she said, before adding, ‘He grew up with a laptop. I had a desktop computer that I shared with my brothers and sisters.’ 

Despite him being younger, the singer explained, ‘He’s very similar to me. We just don’t take life too seriously.’

Hemsworth has also moved on in his love life and has been dating Australian model Gabriella Brooks. 

And earlier this month, the couple confirmed their engagement. At the time, the actor shared a black and white photo as the pair cozied up together and Brooks excitedly flashed her eye-catching engagement ring. 

A few months earlier in June, Cyrus seemingly threw shade at her ex Hemsworth while at an autograph signing. 

While meeting with one fan who shares the same name as her ex-husband, the singer penned a short message while signing the cover of her Something Beautiful album. 

The fan also uploaded the photo onto X as proof to show that Cyrus had written, ‘The Best Liam.’ 

Her fan also shared a snap while posing with the songstress and added the caption, ‘me when I’m “The Best Liam.”‘
