Edward Scissorhands Star Looks Unrecognizable on Rare Outing

A star – who began her successful career decades earlier – looked unrecognizable for a rare outing in Los Angeles this week. 

Kathy Baker stepped out for a lowkey excursion and is known for appearing in a number of television and film projects over the years including Tim Burton’s romantic fantasy Edward Scissorhands (1990). 

The 75-year-old actress made her debut on the screen by taking on a role in the historical drama The Right Stuff (1983) – alongside a star-studded cast such as Sam Shepard, Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid and Scott Glenn. 

The star has also worked alongside other celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Tom Hanks and Charlize Theron. 

Baker has been recognized for her performances in the past, and garnered a number of accolades such as Golden Globe and SAG Award wins.

Baker flashed a small smile while strolling through a quiet neighborhood on Thursday wearing a long-sleeved white shirt as well as tan pants.

Based on her performance in the film, Baker received the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. 

In 1990, she was cast alongside Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder in the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands. 

Two years later, Baker began to portray the character of Jill Brock in the CBS drama series Picket Fences from 1992-1996. 

During her time on the show, the star notably win three Emmy awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She also received a Golden Globe as well as a SAG Award based on her performance. 

She went on to take on minor roles in an assortment of television shows such as Ally McBeal, The Practice, Touched By An Angel, Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy and Medium. 

From 2001 through 2002, Baker appeared in 19 episodes of Boston Public where she played Meredith Peters. 

The actress is also no stranger to the big screen and starred in movies including The Cider House Rules, The Glass House, Cold Mountain, 13 Going On 30, The Jane Austen Book Club, Saving Mr. Banks and The Age Of Adaline. 

During a past interview with the Los Angeles Times, Baker opened up about her love of the comedic genre.

‘I love to do comedy, and I don’t think of things as drama or comedy. I think that if it’s a funny line, it’s a funny line. If it’s a funny moment, it’s a funny moment.’

The Emmy winner added, ‘I try to give all my characters a sense of humor, so I guess I feel like I have done comedy, but maybe I’m better known for drama. 

‘I loved the funny moments in Edward Scissorhands, and I did lots of comedies when I started out in the theater. Any challenge is on my list, of course.’ 

Baker also got candid about aging in Hollywood and expressed to the outlet that she has ‘always believed that if you are willing to play your age that you will work.

‘So it’s the thing of continuing to play your age and accepting it when you’re younger and you suddenly realize, oh, now I’m playing the mom, oh, I’m playing the grandma. Some parts are smaller.’ 

The star explained that she has no intentions of getting a cosmetic procedure and said that she wants ‘to be the only actress in America to not have plastic surgery.’

Baker continued, ‘I worry about my face not having expression. I’ve never been known for glamour, so it’s probably easier for me than it is for someone who has been known for her incredible beauty and glamour. 

‘I always wanted to be Geraldine Page, who was just a fabulous actress with just a nice, normal, expressive face.’ 

The actress’s most recent acting credit was the horror television series Teacup which premiered on Peacock in October 2024. 

The star played the role of Ellen Chenoweth in the show alongside other cast members such as Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer.
