Ahead of the play’s premiere James admitted he’d been suffering with a bout of stage fright and had had  ‘woken up sweating’ thinking about his performance.

Speaking at a 92Y Talks event in August he said: ‘I mean why do a play? I am terrified. I am terrified by this entire experience,’

‘I have woken up every single morning sweating thinking about this speech I have in the middle of the play. I go to sleep listening to a recording of it.

It comes after James was unable to join the Gavin And Stacey back in the UK as they enjoyed a chaotic night out at the National Television Awards where they scooped a major gong.

The BBC sitcom was voted Best Comedy by the viewing public, beating rivals Mrs Brown’s Boys, Brassic and Michael McIntyre’s 25th Year Stand-Up Special.

As the cast and crew made their way to the stage as the show’s iconic theme tune blared out in the O2 Arena, it was clear not everyone was there.

With Rob Brydon, Ruth Jones, Melanie Walters, Rob Wilfort, Laura Aikman and Larry Lamb accepted the award.

Speaking on stage, Larry warmly said: ‘When Ruth and James wrote Gavin & Stacey they created a family that can belong to us forever.’

The 77-year-old then passed the gong over to Ruth as he made way for her to speak.

However, embracing her alter ego Nessa, Ruth savagely said: ‘Yeah, all right, calm down. I’m going to the bar now for a pint of wine.’

Meanwhile, actress Laura, 39, appeared to lose her shoes as she walked on stage barefoot.

Snaps from the press room, where each winning nominee attends following their acceptance speech, showed the star still without her heels.

Laura had wowed in a sparkly silver minidress for the awards, while Ruth wore a sequined maxidress that featured a plunging neckline.

Alison Steadman also wore a maxidress, while Melanie Walters brought edge with a black plunging dress adorned with ruffles and a racy thigh high slit.

Gavin And Stacey’s win comes just days after it was revealed James and Ruth are working on a brand new comedy show.

James and Ruth, have signed a deal that will take the new project away from the BBC and instead onto streaming platform AppleTV+.

A source close to the production revealed that 10 episodes are set to be filmed with an all British cast, with Corden and Jones also starring.

Shooting will begin next year, with the episodes not set to land until 2027.

However, the new show will not feature the iconic characters fans fell in love with on Gavin And Stacey.

James Corden’s Art: What are the critics saying?

The Times

Rating:

Anyone who has ever pined for a play as straightforwardly enjoyable as James Corden’s decade-defining should consider a flight to New York.

This autumn Corden, the British sitcom turned stage turned late-night US telly star, returns to Broadway for the first time since 2013, bringing with him some of that whizzy, bottled-up physical exuberance that his theatre fans so fondly remember.

The Guardian

Rating:

Corden is superb, a perfectly calibrated level of hysterical, sincere and crisp. One blistering monologue sees him ranting, in the voice of three separate characters, for several minutes straight without missing a beat; it was not celebrity compelling the extended applause when he finally collapsed, spent and spittle-covered, into a chair.

Variety

Some two years removed from the end of his Late Late Show, Corden is reasserting himself as a major theatre actor, and his turn as the wobbliest vertex of a friendship triangle would, alone, make the new production of this slippery social satire worth seeing.

The Wrap

[James’ character] is also getting married, and halfway through the play he spills his guts on a major problem he has regarding wedding invitations. It goes on and on, and, of course, Corden milks the extended moment for everything he’s got in a performance that screams, ‘Give me the Tony!’

New York Times

All three are fine, and Corden — back on Broadway for the first time since his whirlwind of a performance in One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012 — is often a lot more than that.

Daily Beast

James Corden Delivers a Masterclass of Comedy in New Play.

Director Scott Ellis makes Corden into the play’s fuzzy border territory, wisely giving him moments of physical comedy to play every bit as hilariously as he delivers his lines.

It is glorious, and this Broadway season’s first showstopper.
