Russell Crowe has told of how he wrote an ‘entire album’ for his ex-wife Danielle Spencer in a bid to try and save their marriage.
Discussing his divorce heartbreak while covering the British GQ Heroes Issue, the actor, 60, recalled his bid to ‘try and communicate with her’ through song when he felt their marriage was coming to an end.
Russell married fellow actor and songwriter, Danielle in 2003, they split in 2012 and their divorce was finalised in 2018.
The former couple share two son Charles, 20, and Tennyson, 17, and still have a close relationship, 12 years on from their seperation.
Speaking to the magazine, he admitted his album The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Vol III was written for his now ex-wife.

Russell explained: ‘That entire album is me talking to my now ex-wife, saying, “We can’t get divorced. What are you doing?”
‘Pretty much every song that I wrote for that album – Too Far Gone, Sadness of a Woman, Love is Impossible, Disappeared – that’s all about my marriage.
‘And I was wondering if having her sing those words, if she would see through them and understand what I was trying to communicate to her.’
The pair met in 1989 on the set of the film The Crossing, and married in April 2003 at the actor’s farm in Nana Glen, New South Wales.
They separated in 2012 and finalised their divorce six years later.
Danielle said that for years after their split, she and Russell would go on holiday every year with their children so that they could have time with both parents.
She has previously spoken about her unique relationship with her ex Russell and how they co-parent their teenage sons.
The singer told Daily Mail Australia at the premiere of Russell’s film Poker Face in 2022 that they are still very much friends and ‘catch up when they can’.

Russell is now dating American actress Britney Theriot while Danielle is in a long-term relationship with author Adam Long.

The actor and Britney have been dating since 2020 but try to keep their relationship out of the public eye.
Last year, Russell told of how he even ‘tricked’ Danielle into singing on this album with him.
He pretended that another woman was recording with him, but that was never the case, and he told Danielle this in the hopes that she would get jealous and offer to sing with him, and it worked.
In a recent interview with The Saturday Telegraph, he said: ‘So there I had her, I loved singing with her. I knew Dani and I were heading for divorce.
‘There are a number of songs on that album talking directly to Danielle, trying to head off what became inevitable.
‘Imagine getting your spouse to sing these songs in that situation.’
