Julie Bowen recalled helping her former co-star, Sarah Hyland, out of an abusive relationship which occurred 10 years earlier.
The Happy Gilmore star, 54, notably portrayed the role of Claire Dunphy in the hit series, Modern Family – with Hyland, 33, playing her on-screen daughter, Haley, over the span of 11 seasons.
Last month in May, Sarah’s ex Matt Prokop was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend – after the actress filed for a restraining actor against Prokop back in 2014.
During an appearance on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast on Monday, host Lauryn Evarts Bosstick stated, ‘Sarah Hyland gives you credit for saving her life after a violent relationship.’
‘Oh, that’s very sweet of her,’ Bowen said in response, with Lauryn pointing out that she was ‘like a mother’ to Hyland.

Julie explained, ‘I was a responsible adult that happened to be around at the right time. I mean, I’m sure another responsible adult would have done the exact same thing. I just love her.’
The host then asked, ‘Do you look at her, like, maternally?’ which prompted the actress to answer, ‘Oh, of course.’
The star added that she looks at all her on-screen, Modern Family children as her ‘kids.’ Ariel Winters and Nolan Gould played her children in the series, with Rico Rodriguez taking on the role of her younger stepbrother.
Lauryn asked, ‘So can you just text them or call them anytime?’ with Bowen replying, ‘Oh, absolutely!’
Back in September 2014, Hyland was granted a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, Matt Prokop.
At the time, she had accused the actor of both physical and verbal abuse, including an argument in May 2014 where he ‘choked’ her until she ‘could not breathe or speak,’ per documents obtained by Us Weekly.
After the pair had broken up, Matt also allegedly sent her ‘threatening’ and ’emotionally disturbing’ text messages as well as calls.
Per the documents, Sarah had also reached out Julie to help her ‘peacefully end the relationship.’

A couple months after Hyland had obtained the permanent restraining order, Bowen stated that Sarah was doing ‘awesome’ after the split.
‘I’m just nosy. I stick my nose in anything and everything. I love my kids, my fake kids and my real kids,’ she told Us Weekly in 2014. ‘If anyone needs help, I’m a soft touch.’
In regards to how Hyland was doing at the time, the actress added, ‘Oh my God, Sarah is so great. She’s an angel. Just love her. I love her.’
That same year, Sarah opened up about her close relationship with her Modern Family co-stars during an interview with People.
‘In every aspect of life they’re the best for me,’ she gushed to the outlet. ‘We’re always there for each other. And it’s wonderful. I love them.’
Last month in May, Prokop was reportedly arrested in Texas after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, per TMZ – and was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Matt and his girlfriend had been out when she allegedly told another individual that she had been assaulted by the actor, according to the Victoria Police Department.
Later that same night, a report of a disturbance in the same area came in and law enforcement discovered both the actor and his girlfriend.
Lauryn asked, ‘So can you just text them or call them anytime?’ with Bowen replying, ‘Oh, absolutely!’

Upon arriving to the scene, police noted that his girlfriend had injuries and prompted an investigation which allegedly revealed that Matt had pushed his partner and also hit her head into something.
Sarah and Matt began dating in 2010 after co-starring in the Disney channel movie titled, Geek Charming.
Hyland has since moved on and tied the knot with TV personality, Wells Adams, during a romantic ceremony in August 2022 at a California vineyard.
Some of her Modern Family castmates also were in attendance, including Bowen, Ariel Winters, Nolan Gould and Sofia Vergara – with Jesse Tyler Ferguson officiating the nuptials.

It was later revealed that before popping the big question, Wells had asked Bowen’s permission to propose to Hyland.
‘Wells asked me my permission to marry her,’ the actress revealed on Instagram back in 2020, per People. It appears she gave her blessing due to the pair saying ‘I do’ two years later after the wedding was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
