Nicole Kidman has revealed she once threw a rock through a window after a difficult day of filming on Big Little Lies.

The Australian actress, 56, spoke about the difficulties of working tough 14-hour long days on set and shared one occasion when she reached breaking point.

Nicole, who plays Celeste Wright in the comedy-drama, also addressed the toll of playing very dark characters as she discussed her ‘pent-up’ anger at the time.

She told The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable: ‘I threw a rock because [the door] was locked and I couldn’t get in, I’d never done that in my life.

‘I obviously [had a lot] pent up, I broke the whole thing, it cost a fortune. And then I went back the next day and I said to Alexander [Skarsgard] and Jean-Marc [Vallée], “I threw a rock through the window,” and they were like, “Whoa…” I said, “I was kind of p**sed off”.

‘But there’s a way in which we operate where the show must go on, and so you just keep going – you show up and you do it and do it and do it and do it, and a lot of times, it’s six months of 12/14-hour days and there really isn’t the time to go, “I need to take care of myself”.’

Nicole went on to admit that she had to move away from playing dark characters after her next role on Expats because she started to find it ‘tough’ on her psyche.

‘After Expats, I went and did a comedy because I went crazy with my own psychology, I was like, “This is unhealthy”,’ she admitted.

Despite the strain of playing Celeste on Big Little Lies, Nicole recently confirmed that she and her co-star Reese Witherspoon were in contact about filming a third season.

The HBO show, based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, was meant to be a one-season miniseries but was revived for another instalment due to its huge success.

And in a recent interview with Elle, Nicole dished on her plans for a third season as she said she was speaking with her co-stars to develop a timetable to shoot.

Nicole, who is an executive producer alongside Reese, revealed it was her 15-year-old daughter Sunday who persuaded her to bring the show back after season two.

‘My daughter is the one who watched both of the series and went, “Okay, there’s just no question, there has to be a third”,’ she dished.

The teenager took an evenhanded view of the tempestuous relationship between Nicole’s character Celeste and her mother-in-law Mary Louise, played by Meryl Streep.

Nicole recalled: ‘[Sunday’s] like: “Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing? I could kind of see the point of view of Mary Louise”.’

Nicole also explained why she and Reese waited so long to bring the show back, after season two aired all the way back in 2019.

She shared: ‘It needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives – because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating.’

The hugely-popular show boasted an A-list cast including Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgard, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Adam Scott.

Nicole first confirmed plans for a third season of Big Little Lies in November while appearing onstage during the CME Group Tour Championship Friday in Florida.

‘I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children and I was thinking I was going to retire and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show,’ she said.

‘And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success,’ she told the audience, adding: ‘We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.’
