Martin Short was named the latest celebrity Mayor of Funner, California this week, where he revealed he no longer believes in ‘bucket lists.’

The term – popularized by the 2007 Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman film The Bucket List – refers to things people want to achieve before they die, or, ‘kick the bucket.’

The 74-year-old comedian – who takes over as Funner, California’s celebrity mayor from Jane Lynch – told People that, ‘there’s not a lot of longing’ about his future.

‘The bucket list thing, I don’t believe in anymore. I now realize, at 74, I would’ve done it,’ Short admitted.

‘Bill Maher and I share that — that we don’t have bucket lists. We’ve talked about that. If I wanted to direct, I would’ve,’ Short admitted.

‘I just love doing it. I love being the mayor of Funner, [Calif.], but also just — I love acting,’ he said.

He joked that being named the Mayor of a city would have been the ‘first thing’ that would have happened in his storied career that has spanned five decades.

‘It went mayor, and then maybe, someday, a People’s Choice Award. That was the pecking order. You can’t get more than that,’ he said.

Short takes over as Funner, California Mayor from Jane Lynch, with other Funner Mayors including Rob Riggle and David Hasselhoff.

The small town in North San Diego County is home to Harrah’s SoCal, with the town officially named Funner in 2016 by the Rincon Tribal Council, the elected governing body of the RinconBand of Luiseño Indians of the Rincon Reservation, California.

They named David Hasselhoff the first “Mayor” in 2017 to a two-year term, followed by Rob Riggle in 2019 and Jane Lynch in 2022.

‘As the mayor-elect of Funner, I promise to be more than just a spokesperson dressed in purple from head-to-toe, but instead, the best mayor in the whole darn state,’ Short said in a statement.

‘It’s my goal to make every part of the already fun Harrah’s Resort SoCal even Funner, and I can’t wait to share my plans with all of my constituents in just six short weeks,’ he added.

Short took an oath to, ‘protect fun, good times, laughing out loud and positive vibes from the negative influences determined to turn a smile upside down.’

The actor will return as Oliver Putnam in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which featured previous Mayor Lynch as a murder victim in Season 3.

Lynch’s character is said to be returning in the upcoming Season 4 – debuting August 27 on Hulu – in the form of various flashbacks.
