It’s Peter MacNicol! The acclaimed actor starred in Ally McBeal from 1997-2002 alongside Calista Flockhart.
His beloved role as John Cage landed him an Emmy in 2001 – but his awards season would become mired in controversy in 2016.
The star’s nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy for his role as powerbroker Jeff Kane in ‘Veep’ season five was rescinded after it emerged he had exceeded the number of episodes needed to qualify for the shortlist.
Nominees must appear in less than 50 per cent of that season’s episodes to be considered eligible and MacNicol appeared in exactly half of Veep’s 10-episode fifth season.
MacNicol played Jonah’s (Timothy Simons) political power broker uncle, and was only scheduled to appear in four episodes at the time his name was put for consideration in time for the May 2 entry deadline, but then appeared for a few seconds in the documentary episode Kissing Your Sister.
The star worked with three-time Oscar winner Streep on 1982 film, Sophie’s Choice.
Alan J. Pakula’s psychological drama centered on naïve writer Stingo (MacNicol) befriending Polish immigrant Zofia ‘Sophie’ Zawistowska (Streep) and her emotionally-unstable lover Nathan Landau (Kline) in 1947.
Streep mastered a flawless Polish accent for her jaw-dropping portrayal of an Auschwitz prisoner forced to choose which of her two children would be sent to the gas chamber, which she nailed in one take.
