She is Ann Magnuson.

The 70-year-old actress has also starred in the films Making Mr. Right (1987), Panic Room (2002) and One More Time (2015).

Magnuson was born in West Virginia.

After graduating from college in 1978 she moved to New York City for fame.

She began as a DJ and performer at Club 57, where artist Keith Haring hung out. And she spent time at the raucous Mudd Club in Manhattan around 1979 through the early 1980s.

Soon her focus turned to her career as a singer: In 1987, Magnuson fronted the faux-heavy metal band Vulcan Death Grip.

Next it was acting. 

Magnuson's first role was as a cigarette girl in 1985's hit film Desperately Seeking Susan, which also starred Madonna and Rosanna Arquette.

She was next in 1987's Making Mr. Right, which starred John Malkovich.

Then it was back to music as Magnuson became the lead vocalist of the band Bongwater, which launched in 1985 and disbanded in 1992.

Finally in 1989 she landed a steady gig on a popular  TV show. 

Magnuson played Catherine Hughes, the editor-in-chief of a Chicago magazine in the sitcom Anything But Love.

Her costars were Jamie Lee Curtis and comedian Richard Lewis.

The show was canceled in 1992. 

In the 1990s she starred in films here and there: she showed up in Small Soldiers, Tank Girl, Tequila Sunrise and Love at Large.

She also guest starred on TV shows such as The Hidden Room, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, The John Larroquette Show, The Drew Carey Show, Caroline in the City, Frasier and CSI: Miami.

In 2018, Magnuson joined the cast of The Man In The High Castle as Caroline Abendsen. She was in five episodes.

Magnuson appeared in the first season of Star Trek: Picard as Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy, the commander-in-chief of Starfleet.

She married architect John Bertram in 2002 and lives in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake.
