Struthers became a household name in the 70s thanks to her role as Gloria Stivic, alongside  late actor-director Rob Reiner in the sitcom All in the Family in the 1970s

But younger audiences would more likely know her as Babette Dell, the eccentric, cat-loving neighbor on the hit series Gilmore Girls, which ran from 2001 to 2007.

The role introduced Struthers to an entirely new generation of fans and continued to do so years later as audiences discover the series now through streaming platforms.

'It's funny, a 20-year-old young lady will call me Babette because of Gilmore Girls, and then her mother, if she's with her, will go, "No darling, she's Gloria",' she told People magazine last year.

Struthers has also recently spoken out about being the target of brutal fat jokes throughout her career and made headlines last year when she revealed her longtime friend and fellow actress Betty White, once embarrassed her at a party for reaching for a cookie.

in January 2025, Struthers said White – who died aged 99 in 2021 - had asked her housekeeper to bring snacks for her guests, and a plate of cookies was put in the center of the table.

She later won over a new generation of fans as Babette Dell, a quirky loveable neighbor on hit series Gilmore Girls

Over two decades ago, Struthers and Reiner reunited onstage together to accept the Innovator award for All in the Family at the inaugural TV Land Awards in March 2003

Struthers recalled: 'I reached for one and she said in front of everyone, "Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you dear, you don't need a cookie."

'[She] totally fat-shamed me in front of the rest of the people in the room. And I thought, "Gosh, that's not nice".'

Struthers, a Save The Children charity activist, was also the subject of a particularly offensive South Park parody in 1997, when the episode 'Starving Marvin' (Season 1, episode 9) saw her character accused of hoarding food meant to go to famine-struck children in Ethiopia.

Her character returned for several other episodes over the years.

The show's creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker later claimed they had nothing against Struthers personally, but simply found it darkly funny to see an overweight woman pleading for donations for starving kids.

Struthers who stands at just 5ft 1in, went on to focus on her health, going from 200 to 150lbs back in 2024 thanks to attention to portion control and mindful eating instead of starvation diets and has managed to maintain a healthy weight since.

Struthers has spoken out about being the target of brutal fat jokes throughout her career and  underwent a weight loss journey in 2024. She is pictured on stage in 2005

She is now the only surviving main cast member of All In The Family. Carroll O'Connor who played Archie died aged 76 in 2001 Jean Stapleton – Edith – passed at 90 in 2013.

Her on-screen husband co-star Rob Reiner and his photographer wife Michele Singer Reiner were

Their son Nick, 32, has been charged with their murders.

'There are no words,'  in the wake of the tragedy. 'This is beyond devastating and my heart is with their family.'

Still a working actress, Struthers is far from retired and continues to act on the screen as well as touring in plays and musicals around the country.

Sally was married to psychiatrist William Rader from 1977 to 1983, and has one daughter, psychotherapist Samantha Struthers Rader, 47.
