3 Surprising Marriage Rules Keeping Kidman & Urban Together for 19 Years

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s 19-year marriage has ended, leaving their fans  heartbroken.

And the celebrated Australian actress, 58, previously reflected on the love and lessons that sustained one of Hollywood’s most admired partnerships – and kept their spark alive for almost two decades.

Throughout their marriage, the pair were known for doing things a little differently – and it seems those quirks were key to maintaining their once-strong relationship.

In past interviews, Nicole revealed one of the surprising secrets to their union: they never texted.

‘We talk all the time, we FaceTime but we just don’t text because I feel like texting can be misrepresentative at times,’ Kidman told Parade in 2018.

‘And I’ve had the thing where I reread texts and I’m like, “What does that mean?” and then read it to somebody and go “Can you interpret that?” I don’t want that between my lover and I.’

The couple also had an unusual marital setup at home that they credited with keeping them close.

In a W Magazine interview, Nicole shared the feature in their bathroom that worked wonders for their relationship.

‘We have a double shower. I hear Keith singing in the shower and I’ll hear his new songs forming,’ she revealed.

‘Key to a successful marriage. Separate commodes and a double-headed shower!’

Meanwhile, Nicole told Vanity Fair that she and Keith always worked hard at making time for each other, despite their busy schedules.

‘Two weeks is too long for us to be apart. We like one week. We start to hurt after seven days,’ she said.

Rumours had been circulating for some time that there was tension between the couple, after it was reported in recent months that Nicole was living in a lavish mansion in England while Keith was on tour in America.

Prior to that, Nicole – but not Keith – applied for Portuguese citizenship.

Beyond these relationship rules, the pair drew inspiration from Nicole’s upbringing.

In a May essay for The Sydney Morning Herald, she credited her late mother, Janelle, for teaching her what it takes to maintain a lasting, loving relationship.

‘In my father, I saw a man who loved my mother, which was the most beautiful thing to grow up watching,’ she wrote.

‘They married very young and made it to 50 years… a feat! I’m very fortunate to have created this coming-up-to-20 year marriage. That’s very much because of my parents.’

Their marriage wasn’t without serious challenges, as four months after their 2006 wedding, Urban entered rehab to tackle addiction issues, and Nicole staged a loving intervention that he credits as life-changing.

Unfortunately, despite Nicole’s best efforts and the wise lessons she carried from her mother, she and her husband – who share daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14 – have parted ways.

Urban recently moved out of their Nashville mansion while on a music tour, while Nicole stayed behind with the kids and juggled a busy filming schedule in London, renting a mansion for $87,000 a month while shooting the Practical Magic sequel.

Sources say the split grew more noticeable after the death of Nicole’s mother in  September 2024: ‘It’s like they both went their separate ways,’ an insider told Woman’s Day.

Their last public appearance together, at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 match in June, hinted at tension.

Body language expert Louise Mahler noted Kidman was ‘fiddling with her left hand,’ while Urban avoided eye contact – a far cry from their usual displays of affection.
