Marlon Wayans shared his journey of accepting and supporting his son Kai after they came out as transgender.

The 51-year-old entertainer — who previously opened up about Kai’s gender identity — said he found himself in a period of soul-searching when he first learned that his eldest child, now 24, was transitioning.

‘It took me all of a week, and in that week I grew the most that I ever did in my life,’ the Requiem for a Dream actor told People on Friday.

He added that he went from ‘defiance to acceptance’ during that time. 

‘You understand the purpose of kids and the beauty of unconditional love,’ Marlon continued. ‘At the end of the day, in my heart, only thing that matters to me is that my child is happy.’

The star is dad to sons Kai and Shawn, 22, with ex Angela Zackery, and daughter Axl, 18 months with ex Brittany Moreland. 

He also said that he incorporates Kai’s gender transition into his latest stand-up routine, aiming to provide not just laughter but also impart some valuable lessons.  

‘I have a contract with my kids: “Whatever you do in life, just know that there’s a possibility I’m going to find some humor and talk about it,”‘ he explained, noting that Kai is ‘okay’ with their dad discussing their personal life on stage.

Marlon also admitted that his comedy routine won’t touch upon the intense custody dispute with his ex Moreland. 

‘I don’t do public battles,’ he explained. ‘You don’t have to be together to let your child grow up in peace. Every child deserves that.’ 

In November 2023, Marlon first disclosed Kai’s transgender identity during an interview on The Breakfast Club.

‘I have a daughter that transitioned into a son. My daughter Amai is now Kai, and so, I talk about the transition.’

‘Not his… their transition, but my transition as a parent, going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance.’

In an interview with the New York radio station, Wayans told how he hoped the potential upcoming comedy routine would help other parents whose children are transitioning.

He added: ‘I think there’s a lot of parents out there that need that message and I know I’m dealing with it. 

‘It was a very painful situation for me but, man, it’s one of the best hours I could ever imagine.’ 

The comedian has two children with his ex-partner Angela Zackery – Kai, 23, and Shawn, 21.

Wayans admitted that although he may misstep on the occasional pronoun, he is fully behind his son, Kai, every step of the way.  

During the chat, the Little Man actor gets confused with the pronouns, often switching between they, he and she – something he recognises he needs to work on. 

He elaborated: ‘They know. They know I love them. They see me try and they’re like, “I’m happy”,’ said Wayans.

The screenwriter divulged that any ignorance he once had about the transgender community were quickly quashed when his son confessed they were transgender.

Continuing his sentiment, Wayans revealed he was always going to accept his eldest son and love him unconditionally for exactly who he is.

He passionately said: ‘I gotta respect their wishes and as a parent I just want my kids to be free – free in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves.’ 

‘The more you know yourself, the more you live your truth, the happier your existence.’

Speaking with DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Lauren LaRosa, the comedian added: ‘So if they can’t get that in a household with their father and their mother, how the f*** do I send them out into the world with that kind of confidence?’

‘I’m just so proud of them for being them – but that don’t mean that I ain’t got jokes.’

The actor revealed the Kai has no qualms about the jokes he tells in the upcoming skit, quipping that the show will be more meaningful than a few laughs.

Wayans has already performed Rainbow Child for a room full of military generals, world leaders and government officials.

Even though telling jokes about his child in a room of influential people was initially frightening, the comedian persisted because of what the skit represented – progress, his children and comedy. 

He remembered his internal monologue saying: ‘All you world leaders in this summit, I want you to think about these people and this synapse and how to be inclusive of this next generation.

‘I see a lot of grey hair here, but these kids that we’re dealing with, they’re different.’

Emme Maribel Muniz is the daughter of Ben’s second wife Lopez, 54, as well as musician Marc Anthony. 

Trailing behind Fin and Emme was Emme’s twin brother Max as well as Ben’s son Samuel. 

Fin and Emme seem to be in step with their changing appearances as both have adopted new looks in the past year.

Both Fin and Emme have cut their hair and have started wearing baggier clothing, which has become a national trend with teens.

The pair have often been spotted spending time out together – sometimes even holding hands – strolling around Los Angeles.

They have enjoyed each other’s company since even before JLo tied the knot with Ben in 2022 – and the year prior, were all smiles during a Disney World outing with the 13 Going on 30 actress. 

Not only are they close in age, but Emme and Fin have long been know for their similarly experimental fashions and hairstyles.

Speaking on the TODAY show last year, Lopez – who is also a mother to Emme’s twin Max – opened up about the move to having all their children under the same roof.

Fin also has a sister, Violet, 18, and brother, Samuel, 15.

‘It’s been, like, a really kind of emotional transition, but at the same time all your dreams coming true,’ she said.

‘It’s just been a phenomenal year. Like, my best year I think since my kids were born.’

In December, a source also told ET that the blended family enjoys spending time together thanks to the children’s close bond.

‘Ben and Jen’s kids get along super well, and everything has been easy and seamless on that front, which has been really nice for them,’ they told the outlet.

‘Ben and Jen Garner are also in a good place. They have a mutual understanding that their children come first and are committed to that.’ 

Garner and Affleck split in 2015 and finalized their divorce in 2018, but maintain a friendly relationship.

Fans on social media have also for years remarked at Emme and Fin’s ‘inseparable’ friendship, dubbing them ‘BFFs’. 

It is understood that the pals also attend the same school, with Fin sure to have helped Emme adjust after their move to Los Angeles from Miami, according to Hola!.

Lopez first publicly introduced Emme’s pronouns to a crowd at the LA Dodgers Foundation’s Blue Diamond Gala where they both performed in June 2022.

‘[The last time] we performed together was in a big stadium like this, and I ask them to sing with me all the time but they won’t,’ the star said onstage.

‘So, this is a very special occasion, because they’re very, very busy and booked and pricey.

‘They cost me when they come out, but they’re worth every single penny because they’re my favorite duet partner of all time.’

Last weekend, Fin debuted their new name before reading a bible verse to the congregation at Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston, West Virginia on Saturday.

The teen has been pictured with their new short cropped hair as early as February this year, but the funeral was the first time the top actors’ child introduced themselves in public with a new name.

The memorial service, streamed live on Facebook, was for Garner’s father William Jack Garner, who died a week earlier age 85.

Following William’s other grandchildren, Fin introduced themselves at the church lectern saying: ‘Hello my name is Fin Affleck,’ then read Chapter 16, Verse 8 from the Book of Proverbs: ‘Better is a little with righteousness, than a large income with injustice.’

‘My identity has been being a mother. Apple’s going to be 20 in May. So I’ve oriented my whole life around them and their schedules and when school starts.’

She explained: ‘You start to let go in increments when they’re driving themselves around or doing certain things. It is a slower process.’

Gwyneth added: ‘I feel really lucky because I have a close group of mom friends and we all raised our kids alongside one another. So we’re kind of in it together.’

Gwyneth recently shared how important it was to her and Chris to have an amicable co-parenting relationship for Apple and Moses’ sake.

She explained that she and Chris ‘both really did not want to have them experience the divorce as a trauma,’ in a cover interview with Bustle.

‘We knew that it would be hard, of course, but we didn’t want them to ever feel in the middle, or that one of us was slagging off the other one.’

The wellness mogul disclosed: ‘At that time, I did a very me thing, which was when I knew I wanted to get a divorce, I did this data collection of talking to adults who had been products of a broken home.’

She revealed: ‘Every single one of them said: “I didn’t care that my parents got divorced. That wasn’t it. But the fact that they wouldn’t speak to each other, that they couldn’t both sit at a dinner table for my birthday…”

‘They said that was the most awful thing. You could see they held it with so much hurt and anger. I was like: “That’s what I’m never going to do.” And we really didn’t.’
